Heidi Mottram studied at the University of Hull obtaining a BSc (Hons) in geography in 1986. Her success at Northumbrian Water Group follows on from an excellent track record in the rail industry where she worked her way up through a variety of roles in British Rail and, following privatisation, in GNER, Midland Mainline and Arriva Trains Northern. As managing director of Northern Rail, the largest train operator in the UK, she led a high-performing team to deliver multi-award-winning service, significant rises in passenger satisfaction and volume growth ahead of industry trends. She was awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours 2009 for services to the rail industry. In support of the wider business community, Heidi has deployed her considerable experience of strategy development, commercial delivery, leadership and first-class people management at chief executive level to impressive effect. She played a leading role in shaping Government thinking in sector as a member of its Green Economy Council; was chair of the North East CBI Council from 2012 to 2014 and remains a member of CBI national board. In addition, Heidi holds a non-executive role at Eurostar and North East LEP and is a council member for Newcastle University. Heidi’s key achievements in recent years include achieving the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the category of Sustainable Development in 2014 and being named as the only water company on the World’s Most Ethical companies list six years in a row (2010-2016).
